Irwin & Vickers ready for home race challenge

Starting from 12th position, CIA Landlord Insurance Honda rider Andrew Irwin will target the top ten in his home race at Donington Park tomorrow.  Irwin delivered his World Supersport career best qualifying position in Superpole 2 and will start Round Six of the Championship from the fourth row of the grid.  Irwin said: “Qualifying was better because we went faster.  We had a small problem with the bike which held us back a little bit but to improve the lap time and not be that far away from the top ten is a positive.   So now I’m going into the race tomorrow still hoping to come away in the top ten.  The bike feels good, the team is working good so I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s race.”

Rookie teammate Ryan Vickers improved again in the afternoon Superpole 1 qualifying session posting a time of 1’32.880 on the combined timesheets and will start his first World Supersport race from 21st  position.

Vickers said: “Superpole went really well, we’ve knocked another half a second off our time so we’ve improved 1.8s over the weekend in the dry.   Third session in the dry and we’ve picked it up again so we’ve got another session tomorrow morning and hopefully we can find a little bit more, me and the bike and just keep progressing.  If we could find another second that would be great, that would put us right in the ball park and hopefully in the race we can get a good start and fight for a Championship point.”

CIA Landlord Insurance Honda Team Manager Simon Buckmaster said: “Andrew got into the 31s so he made another step forward but to be honest his bike was running rough off the bottom when he picked the throttle up, you could hear it.  Ryan’s sounded the same but he thought it was picking up ok but for sure you are losing a little bit on exit there.  We will investigate everything to make it right for the race but by far the best qualifying for Andrew.  Another good aggressive start and Andrew can fight for a finish in the top ten.”

“It’s such a big step up for Ryan from British Superstock 600 to World Supersport and he is learning all the time and progressing very well.  Again, he gained time this afternoon.   He will find some more from himself in warm-up and we will look to improve the bike a little for him and just see what we can do in the race.  We have to say he can fight inside the top 20 and even look to see if we can fight for a point in the race.”
