PTR Honda are pleased to announce the return to the team of Hikari Okubo for the 2020 FIM Supersport World Championship.
Japanese rider Okubo is already familiar with the PTR Honda squad having made his WorldSSP debut with the team in 2016 and remaining with them for 2017.
The 26-year-old from Kodaira returns with more experience in the WorldSSP class having finished fifth overall in the 2019 Championship with Puccetti and is sure to be a strong contender for podium finishes in 2020.
Okubo said: “I’m so happy I can join WorldSSP with PTR Honda again. I know this team because I rode for them for two years but this time my riding is better and I think I can be World Champion with them. It’s my target from a long time ago and I know it is the same for PTR Honda. I really want to thank the team, my sponsors and my fans.”
PTR Honda Team Manager Simon Buckmaster said: “We’re really excited for Hikari to be rejoining our PTR team. Of all the riders we looked at, we wanted and needed a front running rider for the 2020 season and I honestly believe with Hikari we have the best rider we could hope for. Of the riders we spoke to the difference here is that Hikari really wanted to ride for the team again; he believes in the team, our bike and the package so it couldn’t be better. We’ve worked with him before and he is really good to work with. I think the two years on the Puccetti machine will stand him in good stead and he will be an even better rider on our Honda CBR600RR. I really think he is the rider that can put us back where we belong, challenging at the front of the field. We can’t wait to test with him in January and in Australia ahead of the race. Everyone is fired up and looking forward to it. We will announce who his teammate will be as soon as we can and we have another exciting announcement coming up shortly about the team. Thanks to everyone for making this happen.”
